‘How my brothers ganged up against me’ – Psquare’s Peter Okoye opens up

THENETNG spent some time with him in his Lekki-home
on Thursday, March 17, having been invited by his new
manager, Olatunde Michaels of Play Centre.
When we arrive, he’s sitting in the living room, with a
young assistant keeping him company. He’s dressed
casually, in a patterned T-shirt and a pair of dark blue
jeans.
‘How now’?
‘I’m okay man. Long long time.’
We hugged briefly as I sat next to him.
But something is wrong.
Peter and Paul, who live just a building apart, rarely set
eyes on one another. They’re no longer the inseparable
duo everyone loves to love. They haven’t performed
together since December 28, 2015. In fact, they’ve only
seen each other a couple of times since then, in rather
hostile circumstances, Peter tells Nigerian Entertainment
Today. After years of dealing with family issues and
trying to solve their differences, they’re now dishing out
dirty details on social media, using their very own hands
to drag a brand they’ve built over nearly two decades
through the mud.
‘I and Paul stay together in this estate and the last time I
saw him was about a week ago.’
But you live in the same premises. Why is this so?
‘Truth is, I’ve not been in talking terms with Paul since
December 2015 and that was why I travelled in January
because I had a lot on my mind.
Something happened at Mavin Studios last year that
broke my heart.
Now listen to this, Psquare featured on songs with J-
Martins, Bracket, LKT, 9ice and these 4 songs were done
by Paul alone, but guess what, did I appear in the videos,
YES’.
‘Now hear this, we have other collabos with Kaha, Darey,
Ruggedman. I did these songs alone. How come they
don’t have videos? Paul refused to appear in the videos.’
‘So I told Paul that when next he does a collabo alone, he
should be in the video alone, because it got to a point
where artistes began to feel if they did a collabo with Paul
it [would] get a video, but if it was me, it [wouldn’t] get a
video.
The last collabo we did was with Flavour and I refused to
do another one. Even Flavour had to speak all the Igbo he
knows to convince me before I agreed to do it. Only for
my brother to come and tell me that ‘shey I thought you
said you won’t appear in any video that I did the collabo
alone? Why did you appear on this one?’. I was sad but I
knew another one will come’.
‘So Tiwa Savage called me; apparently Paul had done a
song with her – not the campaign song they are
promoting now, another Psquare collabo entirely. So she
[said] she’s been trying to reach Paul to get the CD of the
song from him [because] he’s already done his part, so I
went to Paul’s house to help ask for it and tell him I want
to go to the studio to do my verse and he said he doesn’t
know where the CD is.’
‘I went to the Mavin studio to meet Tiwa. When I got
there, she asked for the CD and I told her Paul didn’t give
me any CD, so I called him again and gave the phone to
Tiwa and [he] told her on phone that the CD is at Omole,
so I got into the studio, recorded my verse and when I
finished, everybody was clapping. I was surprised to
realize that Paul had [told] them that I don’t sing or write
songs.’
‘I felt really bad and betrayed, but I covered up for him. I
jokingly asked Teebillz if they gave him Red Label and he
said yes, so I was like you guys caused it, and we
laughed over it. So when my assistant went to pick up the
CD, Paul and Jude started shouting at him to ‘ask Peter
what is he doing at the Mavin studio? He knows how we
work.’ The next day, I went to Paul and told him how I felt
when I heard what he said. Only for Jude to say that he
made Paul the lead singer of Psquare 8 years ago! A
leader leads, he doesn’t destroy.’
‘When it came to decision-making, it was always a
Triangle formation, and the highest vote wins.
‘I’ll give you an instance’.
‘We had to go perform somewhere once, and because I
had a slight argument with Paul, he said he wasn’t going.
It was the wedding of the President’s daughter. When I
got to the airport my brother wasn’t there, and I [didn’t
know] how I was going to explain to the President that we
[couldn’t] perform. I made up my mind to go with the
band, perform like that and lie that my brother was sick.
So we left for Abuja, and when we got to the hotel, my
assistant manager called [to say] he was on the way to
the airport with Paul, so we had to wait for them to land
in Abuja and that was why we couldn’t make it on time to
the reception.’
‘The president was mad. In fact, Mama Peace (Patience
Jonathan) was really mad. But we eventually made up for
it with a performance at the Gala night. Only for Jude to
[tell me that] Paul said he wasn’t going for a show and I
still went [without him]. Imagine if Jude had a proper
structure and we had contracts? That wouldn’t happen.
And it was more because the show came through me. If
the show came through Jude, it wouldn’t have happened.
I don’t have a problem with doing things as a family, but
structure and proper organization is important too. The
name Psquare is very big outside but inside we have no
structure. I see people like Audu of Chocolate City, Mavin
Records, even Ubi Franklin, and I wanted us to have a
structure like that. Psquare is just up there because of
the grace of God.’
You’ve said a lot about Jude being the problem, and how
you’re the minority. But, really, as Peter, what do you
bring to the table?
‘It’s really sad that people have labeled me ‘Dancer’ and
they don’t really know what I do for Psquare. Kudos to
Paul, I’m not a good songwriter; in fact, I’ll rate myself
30%, so when it comes to song writing, I give it to Paul
100%.
‘However, not writing songs does not disqualify you from
being a musician. I can tell you for free that a Nigerian
wrote two of the songs on Rihanna’s new album. I’ve
travelled a lot and most times people ask, ‘which one are
you, the singer or the dancer’? And it’s really sad.’
‘In Psquare, I am the creative person, I can sit-down and
tell you what people want to hear, what they want to see
and what they want to learn from Psquare. But it’s not
something to brag about.’
‘Jude directs all our videos.’
‘This whole thing began when Paul went online and
started posting lyrics of most of our songs on Instagram
[and saying]that he wrote them all, just because Peter
brought in something to the table. I had been trying to
bring more business for Psquare. I didn’t know it was
going to cause problems. I sent my manager to a meeting
in Senegal to meet with Universal music about getting us
deals, and when he came back, the way they responded
to him wasn’t encouraging.’
‘So I had to send Diouf (the footballer) to help get the
documents and convince my brothers before we could
pull through with the deal. After some months, we started
making money. Meanwhile, while filling the forms, Jude
filled everything as Psquare. So the first payment came
and we shared it. The second payment was bigger, and
we shared it too. That was when Paul said we had to re-
fill the form and give proper credit to the songwriter
(Himself) and said if the form wasn’t brought back, he
would expose me and tell the world that he writes all the
songs. The next day he went online to post those lyrics.
So my question is, when he was doing that what did Jude
do about it? Absolutely nothing!’
PAUL IS WEAK
‘I remember I once told Paul something when Jude
became our manager; he was using the term ‘Our Money,’
that was when we made our first 1 million [naira]. I called
Paul and told him that our former manager used to make
about 15%, and now that Jude is our manager, let’s think
of a percentage that we’ll be giving him and put it on
paper. Paul said it’s not necessary. He probably went to
tell Jude about it. I’m sorry to say this, but I think Paul is
weak.’
‘You know they say change is constant, you can’t stay in
one spot. As the industry moves, you move. So I won’t
say the problem we have is money. I think everybody is
just dragging power unnecessarily. Imagine Jude telling
me that he’s in charge of Psquare and there’s nothing
Peter and Paul can do about it, and I look at Paul and he’s
quiet about it. I’ve never seen where a manager talks to
his artistes anyhow. If there’s an issue you should call us
aside quietly to talk about it.’
WHY I CALLED OUT JUDE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
‘On December 14, 2015, we sat down to have a meeting
hoping to set a proper structure in place, but Paul noticed
that it wasn’t working the way he wanted, so he said he’s
starting a new group. I thought he meant he wanted to
start a record label, and he was like no, he’s starting a
new group that he belongs to. And Jude simply said,
‘anybody stop you?’ He picked up his phones and walked
out of the meeting. I felt it had already been discussed
behind me. I later found out that Paul was already
recruiting for the group and Jude is their manager. At the
moment I hear they are called ‘The MVPs’ I don’t know
what it means yet.’
‘So how do you expect me to be managed by the same
person we’ve been having issues with, who is now the
manager of the other group? There’ll surely be conflict of
interest.’
‘[Recently] Jude called me, after I had said he was fired.
He called me on a Thursday to say ‘Hope you know we
are going to the embassy tomorrow for that show in
Holland.’ I know about the show, [because] it was already
booked before the issues started, so I told him, ‘Bro you
are not my manager, talk to my manager.’ He said,
‘Noted.’ The next day, they went to the embassy with the
new group members, which means they had already set
up their interviews at the embassy because it’s not
possible to get an appointment in less than 24 hours. I
traced the organisers and told them Jude represents only
Paul. I told them this is what it takes to get Peter and
Paul, Peter alone or Paul alone.’
‘So I went on social media to protect our careers, because
if I didn’t do that, Psquare will not release any material
anytime soon, they’ll be busy promoting their artistes.’
‘And I remember going to talk to Paul about it before I
went on social media. I went to his house, and he was in
his room with his friend, [whom I asked to excuse us, but]
Paul said, no, his friend should stay, [and that] anything I
want to say should be said in front of him. So I said, no,
you know we are brothers and he was like, ‘oh, na now
you know say we be brothers.’ I told him I came to talk to
him about what’s been happening, but it was turning into
an argument so I left and I travelled out. I was away for
over a month, knowing that we didn’t have any shows at
that time. I went to Turkey and London to rest my mind,
my friend Samuel Eto’o invited me to come.’
Peter and Eto'o2
HOW I FIRED JUDE
‘The day I fired Jude was at a concert. The day I came
back, we had a show, so I went straight to the venue in
Lagos and told Jude I want to talk to him, and he said I
should say anything I want to say in front of everyone,
[which] was the same attitude Paul gave me before I
travelled. So Jude said if I like, I should get out, and I said
‘guy don’t embarrass me.’ He said who are you, because
you think you are Psquare? So I told him openly that if he
cannot resolve me and Paul’s issue, he doesn’t deserve to
be our manager, and he said I should get out. There and
then I told him ‘You are fired’! He looked at me and said,
‘You fit fire me?’ That was when I entered my car and
started tweeting. How else can you take him out?’
‘[In fact,] long before I made up my mind, Paul had
already said there’s no more Psquare, [and that] if Jude
leaves, he goes with him.'
‘Before I announced my management, I wanted my mind
to be clear, so I went back to Paul, this time we were
alone and we [discussed things]; I told him I had no
issues with him, but he needs to stop letting Jude use him
as a shield. Both of us started shedding tears, and when
we finished he still said he hopes I’m not here to tell him
that I still want Psquare, and I told him I want to move on,
because he already has a manager (Jude) and I don’t, so I
had to structure myself too. And I didn’t want to allow the
Psquare name to fade before moving on. Look at Don
Jazzy and Dbanj, when they broke up, they waited for like
6 months and had to start again. Now, that Psquare just
broke up, let me use the name to move on quickly,
because there’s no time.’
IF OUR MUM WAS STILL ALIVE
‘To be honest with you, I feel if our mum was still alive,
we would have pushed her to her grave with this whole
thing. It’s really sad that even with everything going on, I
still stand with Paul.’
SIGNING SOLO DEALS
‘It still boils down to the fact that Psquare was not
structured. Music is like football, Messi has his manager,
Neymar has his manager, Suarez has his manager, but
when they get to the pitch, they play as a team’.
‘Before I did the Olympic deal, I’d brought some deals for
Psquare. The people endorsing Psquare only see Peter
and Paul, but behind [the scenes] its Peter, Paul and Jude
so the price goes so high that it never works.’
‘But when a deal comes to my table, it’s not like they
called Jude and I went behind to talk to them, the deal
came directly to me from Jude’s friend. He called me and
told me about it, and before then I had already established
my own beverage factory and the deal coming was from
PZ, which means I could do more business with them, so
should I lose that deal because they didn’t call Jude?’
‘I asked them why me and not Psquare, and they said
they couldn’t afford Psquare, and the brand was tailored
to fit one person. So I went back to tell Paul and Jude and
they didn’t say anything. They didn’t ask me not to do it.
Don’t get it wrong, we’ve been doing different private
businesses, the only difference was that the Olympic deal
came out in public. I’ve been doing mass housing
projects on my own, Paul has been doing real estate,
Jude has been doing his own thing, he even [set up the]
Northside record label, so it’s not like it’s the first thing
I’m doing alone. It’s just the first one that went public.’
‘So even when I decide to open my beverage factory,
people will still ask why I am doing it alone without my
brother.’
THE NEXT LEVEL
‘Because I announced new management, people feel I’m
the one going solo, but Paul has already gone solo. He’s
moved on and didn’t need to announce any new
management because he still works with Jude, so I had to
announce mine and believe it or not, people are booking
me for gigs already.’
‘And guess what, I’ll still perform Psquare songs, nobody
can stop me, nobody can stop Paul too, we didn’t have a
contract with Jude, so I have the right to perform Psquare
songs especially the ones I took part in’.
‘I’ll also consider releasing solo songs and even albums.
Truth is – in the last album Paul did some songs alone, I
did some songs alone. ‘Bring It On’ was Paul alone, ‘Eje
Ajo’, ‘Shekini’ was done by me alone’.
‘Remember the 4 songs ‘Free For Fans’ that we released,
those songs were removed from the last album and I
leaked them’.
‘I have some songwriters already, V-Tek writes for me,
and I’m still bringing up more’.
‘Because of what was happening, it was like two against
one, so I said let’s share our properties. When I said that,
Paul said if we want to share our properties, Jude must
get the same share with us otherwise Psquare will split
and I was like ‘SPLIT-AGAIN?’
‘Our lawyer came and told Paul that it’s wrong to share it
equally with Jude, but he insisted, so we divided every
property we owned in Lagos, Jos, America, Abuja. In-fact
the right and left wing of the Square Ville mansion
belongs to Paul and Jude now.
So that was how we shared all our properties equally
among the three of us about two or three years ago.’
‘After sharing everything, I called Paul again and spoke to
him about a proper structure. We’ve been with people like
Akon and co and we see how it’s done. Right now,
Psquare has millions of dollars in royalties hanging in the
air.’
‘All our endorsement and shows are shared equally
between the three of us as well.’
‘After what it took to share our properties, I was
embarking on a project, so I needed more money and I
wanted to sell my house in America and buy something
smaller, because I spend close to $30,000 to maintain
that condo every year.’
‘So I called my caretaker to begin the process and she
told Jude and Paul to send their data page and passport
photographs, but they refused because they know I
wanted to the sell the house. And see the value of dollars
now. The house was valued at 100M then, but if I sell it
now, I could make extra 250M.’
‘And we already signed paper works and document of the
house that it belongs to me but Jude ignored it, so I called
our lawyer, Festus Keyamo to inform him about the
development. He called them and they both refused to
pick his call, so he sent them a text and requested that we
should have a meeting, but Jude replied him and said no
need for a meeting that the America house will be sold.’
‘Paul said we agreed and signed on how to share but we
haven’t really shared it yet, after all Jude is still holding
on to the documents.’
‘Three of us have properties close to each other in
Parkview and that’s why I want to sell my own and move
to Banana Island.’
‘I can’t really understand why they don’t want a structure,
to me I think it’s ignorance, and if I decide to do it, it’ll
seem like I’m looking for trouble.’
Jude, who dissociated himself from Psquare in a social
media post on Thursday, hours after our interview with
Peter, declined commenting for this story. He told our
correspondent ‘I’m sorry I can’t talk about it.’
MY WIFE AND MY MUM
‘People think we changed when we started having wives.
Before my mum died, she was at St Nicholas hospital on
the island, and my sisters were living in this house (in
Lekki), and every morning before my wife goes to work,
she’ll leave home at 5am in the morning to go and stay
with my mum even before we get there ourselves. And
when she closes from work, she’s back with her again.’
‘So I just laugh when I hear people say my mum didn’t
like my wife. It’s my wife and sister that prepare my
mum’s meals in the kitchen.’
‘Now let me shock you: our wives, the three of them are
the closest set of people you can imagine. Even with all
that’s going on. It’s really surprising. Somehow, they
respect themselves and stayed out of the whole drama
and I respect them a lot. And that’s somehow what has
kept us together for this long, otherwise Psquare would
have ended like two or three years back.’

Windstorm Cuases Harm To The Disabled People In Niger State - Photos

A powerful wind storm that occurred before the rainfall on
Thursday (yesterday) last night causes more harm to
some physically challenged people at an Orphanage
complex in Minna, Niger state... The victims were taken to a hospital by officials of the
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Niger State Chapter last night.

Saraki To appears In Court Today

Today’s scheduled resumption of the trial of the President
of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct
Tribunal undoubtedly affirms the present administration’s
mantra that no one is above the law. However, the political
drama that shadowed the emergence of Saraki as the
country’s number three citizen also paints the matter of
politics as an issue in the trial.
By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor
Saraki is being tried on a 13 count charge including
failure to declare his assets, operating a foreign bank
account among other charges bordering on the violation
of the code of conduct for public officers.
Today’s formal resumption of trial follows Saraki’s failed
efforts to cut short the trial on the basis of what he cited
as bias and political persecution. The Senate President
had approached several courts reaching the Supreme
Court, which all refused to stop the trial.
The Senate President had among others, cited the fact
that the authorities failed to abide by the provisions of the
CCT Act which in Section 3 (d) stipulates that the Code of
Conduct Bureau, CCB should, first of all, notify a public
officer of any issue the bureau may have against him or
her before taking the case to the CCT. The Supreme
Court, however, refused to consider that provision as it
ruled that Saraki should face trial. Besides, Saraki had
also sought to affirm the fact that the CCT as presently
constituted does not form a quorum to try a case.
Political witch-hunt
But beyond the legalese is the whispering claim by
associates of the Senate President that the case against
him simply arose out of political witch-hunt. Their claim
is that if Saraki had not become Senate President that the
issues surrounding his assets declaration when he was
governor more than six years ago would not have arisen.
They have also sought to point at the fact that of the
more than 5,000 public officers expected to declare their
assets to the CCB that only a few have been brought to
trial; remarkably, the last high profile person to have been
brought to trial was the former Lagos State governor,
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose case in 2011 was
generally alleged to have been a scheme by the former
Goodluck Jonathan administration to browbeat the then
opposition leader.

Given Tinubu’s pre-eminence in the former opposition
camp, it was alleged that the Jonathan administration
wanted to humble him by making him face the CCT on
issues that arose almost six years after he had left office.
Remarkably, the Jagban as he is famously hailed by
political associates overcame what was alleged to have
been the political persecution of the Jonathan
administration by citing Section 3 (d) of the CCT Act, to
wit, to say that he had not been previously served by the
CCB on any anomalies on his assets declaration.
The Saraki team according to sources are also hoping to
project that fact when his case comes up today. But
beyond the trial is the unfolding snare for the ruling All
Progressives Congress, APC in the continued trial of
Saraki. A conviction for Saraki could further destabilise
the Senate to the amazement of the APC.
Unbeknown to many operatives of the APC, the party’s
majority in the Senate outside senators aligned to Saraki
may not be defensible. With the balance of the parties
being APC, 59, PDP 44, and Labour 1 with four seats
outstanding, the propensity of the mainstream APC to
push through legislative proposals could be hampered
should the about 30 APC senators aligned with Saraki
team up with the opposition PDP.
It is a danger that the leaders of the APC have yet to
contemplate. President Muhammadu Buhari, who could
suffer the backlash the more according to sources, may
not have serious issues with Saraki.
“Buhari’s problem is the presence of Senator Ike
Ekweremadu in the office of Deputy President of the
Senate and his anger is that Saraki helped Ekweremadu
to that office.” The president’s angst against
Ekweremadu is said not to be personal but rather,
ideological. The president, sources said, is still miffed
with the PDP and what the party did to him in his years in
the opposition.
Should Saraki lose out in the emerging case, the Senate
could be headed for a fresh leadership election in which
the PDP now revitalised after its bruising losses in 2015,
could as well challenge whosoever the APC could
produce. Even with the lack of unity in the APC with its
senators divided between the Unity Forum and Like
Minds, it could become an enticement for the PDP to
dare the APC by entering the fray with the assurance that
APC senators inclined to Saraki could align with them.

Kogi Assembly: Beyond House of Reps takeover

In this report, John Ameh examines the events that led to the House of Representatives taking over legislative duties of the Kogi State House of Assembly and the implication for lawmaking in the state
A fresh dimension was introduced into the festering crisis in the Kogi State House of Assembly on Wednesday, March 9 – the decision by the House of Representatives to take control of the assembly, a fallout of the February 16 ‘impeachment’ of the Speaker, Mr. Momoh Jimoh-Lawal, by five members.
The Kogi Assembly, when fully constituted, has 25 members. However, as of February 16 when the impeachment of Jimoh-Lawal was pronounced, the House had 20 members, the other five having been sacked by electoral courts.
It implied that five of the 20 members announced the removal of the speaker, a development which became the immediate cause of the crisis.
The House of Representatives, in its first reaction to the impeachment on February 23, passed a resolution describing the action of the five lawmakers as “unconstitutional, null and void.”
The House’ resolution followed a motion moved by a lawmaker from Kogi State, Mr. Karimi Sunday, who incidentally is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The House, in agreeing with the arguments made by Sunday, resolved that the five lawmakers failed to comply with the provisions of Section 92(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The House further stated that, in the circumstances, it would be forced to invoke Section 11(4) of the same constitution if the Kogi lawmakers did not revert to the status quo.
Between February 23 when the Representatives issued their warning and March 9 when the House took over, the crisis in the assembly became worse, with the 15 members in the Jimoh-Lawal camp and the five on the other side disrupting the peace in the state.
The Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello, is allegedly backing the five lawmakers and ensuring that there is police protection for their activities.
In a bid to arrest the situation from degenerating further, the House wielded its powers on Wednesday by invoking Section 11(4) of the constitution to take over Kogi Assembly. Its action was prompted by the recommendation of a 10-member investigative panel chaired by the Deputy Whip of the House, Mr. Pally Iriase.  The House also directed the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, to deploy a special team of policemen from Abuja in Lokoja to seal off the premises of the state assembly.
Section 11(4), which the House invoked, reads, “At any time when any House of Assembly of a state is unable to perform its functions by reason of the situation prevailing in the state, the National Assembly may make such Laws for the peace, order and good government of that state with respect to matters on which a House of Assembly may make laws as may appear to the National Assembly to be necessary or expedient until such time as the House of Assembly is able to resume its functions; and any such laws enacted by the National Assembly pursuant to this section shall have effect as if they were laws enacted by the House of Assembly of the state.”
The House held the view that the situation in Kogi had reached a point where the assembly could no longer discharge its duties.
The provision clearly mentions “National Assembly,” meaning that the takeover should be a joint project of the Senate and the House of Representatives. It is expected that the House’ resolution will get the concurrence of the Senate for the National Assembly to assume full control of Kogi assembly by making laws for the peace and good governance of the state.
However, of more concern is the view of observers that the crisis in Kogi depicts the vulnerability of state assemblies in Nigeria’s fledgling democracy. State legislatures function more as appendages of the executive arm of government, in this case, the state governor.
Political analysts strongly believe that decisions are taken at the legislative houses after some late-night meetings or consultations with the governors. Speakers, in most cases, are usually anointed choices of governors and they can be removed at the pleasure of chief executive.
Ironically, in 2010, the same state Houses of Assembly rejected an amendment to the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly to grant them financial autonomy. Between 2010 and 2015, more speakers were impeached at the pleasure of governors. Unfortunately, when the state assemblies endorsed another amendment to get autonomy in 2015, the constitution amendment bill was not signed into law by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Insiders in the political game in the state have hinted that the situation in Kogi is a reflection of the desire by the governor to consolidate his reign.  According to them, there is a marriage between what is playing out and the circumstances surrounding his emergence as governor, which is traceable to the demise of the late Abubakar Audu.
Audu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the last governorship poll in the state, had died just as the results of the poll were being announced. Both Audu and the then sitting PDP governor, Mr. Idris Wada, were from the majority ethnic group in the state, which had used its majority control to dominate political developments in the state over the years.
Audu’s death threw up Mr. Yahaya Bello, who is from a minority ethnic group. Bello came second in the APC primary, which produced Audu. It was the wisdom of the APC to pick him as the replacement to Audu to contest the subsequent bye-election.
The development also implies that for the first time in the history of the state, providence has beckoned on a minority tribe to lead, while the majority would take the back seat. Incidentally, Jimoh-Lawal is also from the same minority group as Bello.
Close watchers of how the drama is playing out are seeing the purported removal of Jimoh-Lawal as Speaker as part of a “grand design” to sustain the governor’s hold on power by placating the majority tribe with the positions of deputy governor and speaker of the House of Assembly.
But, observers say in executing the design, the five ‘fronting’ lawmakers either ignored the provisions of Section 92(1)(c) of the constitution or they simply flouted it. The law stipulates that to impeach the speaker, the resolution shall secure the votes of “two-thirds majority” of all members of the assembly.
Section 92(1)(c) states, “If he (speaker) is removed from office by a resolution of House of Assembly by the votes of not less than two-third majority of the members of the House.”
Observers have said when considering the fact taken that there were 20 legitimate members of the House at the time of Jimoh-Lawal’s ‘removal,’ the resolution should mandatorily secure the votes of no fewer than 13 members. On the other hand, were the members to be the original 25, the resolution would secure at least the vote of 16 lawmakers to pass the test of the constitution.
In the light of the above, the House of Representatives seems to be on the right path by invoking Section 11 (4), according to observers. Yet, some have argued that even the House is an interested party in case. Mr. James Faleke, running mate to the late Audu, is the Chairman, House Committee on Customs. The Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, whom the 15 Kogi lawmakers first reported their case, is a strong ally of Faleke. Both of them currently represent Lagos State in the House of Representatives.
On the other hand, Faleke is in court to contest the declaration of Bello as the governor of the state. Faleke believes he should be the governor on the ground that Audu had ‘won’ the governorship election before his demise.
Analysts have noted that how the action of the House will take effect depends on a number of factors, one of which is the body language or reaction of the APC-led Federal Government to the development. It also depends on which side of the divide the leadership of the APC belongs, according to them.
The House had similarly taken this path before on two occasions, each ending in a fiasco. A former Governor of Ogun State, Mr. Gbenga Daniel, had superintendent over a divided state assembly in 2009. There was a group of 11 and another group of 15 led the ‘impeached’ Speaker, Mrs. Titi Oseni.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives then, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, an indigene of Ogun, who had political differences with Daniel, was seen as an interested party in the assembly crisis. When the Federal House moved to take over Ogun assembly, the governor quickly went to court to challenge the powers of the House to go it alone without the endorsement of the Senate, given the express provision of Section 11 (4) of the constitution. The matter was dragged and the House could not take over the assembly successfully.
In July 2013, a similar scenario played out in Rivers State, when the crisis in the state House of Assembly peaked and violence erupted on the floor of the chamber frequently. Observers of the crisis had hinged it on the sour relationship between the current Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, who was the state governor then and the presidency in the last administration.
The House had intervened and passed a resolution to take over the affairs of Rivers assembly. But, again, that was all to it. Like in the latest case of Kogi, there were Rivers lawmakers in the National Assembly, who were interested parties in the crisis back in Port Harcourt.
Those who followed the event closely have stated that it is not on record that the House passed any laws for Rivers or that the governor sent any bills to the National Assembly on behalf of the state. The crisis in the assembly raged till the tenures of the both legislative houses wound down in 2015.
Analysts have predicted that there are no indications yet that the current siatution in Kogi will be different from the two aforementioned. Already, the group of 15 members in the majority, have chosen the appropriate option by approaching the court to interpret Section 92 (1)(c) of the constitution and how it applies to the removal of Jimoh-Lawal.
Iriase, who led the investigative panel on a visiting toLokoja, defended the position of the House.
“The House acted in the best interest of Kogi State and the peace and security of the state by taking over the affairs of the assembly”, he stated.
On his part, Sunday, a stakeholder in Kogi politics, said he was moved to sponsor the motion to halt a gradual decline to possible anarchy in the state.
“We have a situation in the state where there is always tension. We cannot watch and let it degenerate to anarchy”, he added.
Commenting on the development, the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, confirmed that the House would indeed secure the concurrence of the Senate for the takeover to have full effect in line with the provision of Section 11(4) of the constitution.
“We in the House have started the process. Obviously, we will forward the resolution to the Senate for concurrence. That won’t be a problem at all”, Namdas added.

Davido Floats New Record Label

Fresh from signing a mouthwatering deal with international
music label, Sony Music Entertainment, pop sensation,
Davido has floated a new record label.
Aptly named ‘Davido Worldwide Music’, the need to float
the new record label according to the ‘Aye’ crooner was
necessary following his new recording and distribution deal
with Sony Music.
Speaking with ERAVE on the new project Davido disclosed
that he cannot sign any international deal without a
verifiable and known company. “I cannot sign an
international deal without a company. Since I cannot sign
as Davido, I registered the ‘Davido Worldwide Music’ label.
It is a company managed separately by myself, my
manager, my executive producer and HKN for my
international endeavours.”
“The Sony deal doesn’t affect HKN label in any way. Sony
Music relates with Davido’s new record label for the
international market. Don’t go and write ‘Davido leaves
HKN’ because I don’t want my brothers to come after me,”
he added jokingly.
You will recall that Davido penned a music deal with Sony
Music in January 2016. The 2 album deal is a recording
and distribution deal which will allow for the publishing and
global distribution of intellectual materials from the
‘Skelewu’ crooner by Sony Music Entertainment.
His label, HKN Gang which he co owns with his elder
brother, Adewale Adeleke is home to music acts such as
Sina Rambo, B-Red, Danagog, Deekay and the newly signed
Mayorkun.

Late Minister Ocholi, family wore no seat belts, driver has no licence – FRSC

An investigation by the Federal
Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has
blamed Taiwo Elegede, the driver
of the late Minister of State for
Labour and Productivity, James
Ocholi, for over speeding.
The road safety agency also said
apart from the driver’s high
speed, failure to use seat belts by
the deceased minister and his
family members decreased their
chances of survival in the crash.
He added that by theory, the
occupants of the front seats
received less injuries because they
made use of their seat belts.
Mr. Ocholi died alongside his wife
and son, on Sunday in an auto
crash along the Kaduna-Abuja
expressway.
The FRSC investigation also
revealed that Mr. Elegede had no
valid driver’s licence.
The investigation report was read
on Wednesday by the Corps
Marshal of FRSC, Boboye
Oyeyemi, during a valedictory
session of the Federal Executive
Council in honour of the late
Ocholi at the Council Chambers of
the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“There were 10 persons involved
in the accident and 9 were adults.
The minister and his son died on
the spot, while his wife died at the
hospital. The driver of the
crashed vehicle was moving at
excess of the stipulated speed
when he had a tyre burst.

Nigeria oil workers shut down state oil company, NNPC, over unbundling

Angry oil workers have shut down all offices
and facilities of the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, in protest of
Tuesday’s splitting of the state oil company by
the federal government.
There are fears of fresh fuel scarcity as a
result of the protest.
The government had announced the
unbundling of the NNPC into seven
independent units.
Two major unions in the oil and gas sector
had on Friday rejected the planned splitting.
The spokesperson for the Petroleum and
Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of
Nigeria, PENGASSAN, Emmanuel Ojugbana,
had said that the union was not carried along
in the decision to split the company.
Similarly, the president of the Nigeria Union
of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers
(NUPENG), Igwe Achese, had said union would
not accept the decision without knowing how
the manpower that would operate in the 30
companies would be managed.
On Tuesday, the Minister of State for
Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu,
announced the unbundling of the oil company
into seven independent units, namely
Upstream, Downstream, Gas & Power
Marketing, Refineries and Ventures, Corporate
Planning & Services and Finance and
Accounts.
Each of the units would be headed by chief
executive officers, namely Bello Rabiu for
Upstream; Henry Ikem-Onih (Downstream);
Saudu Mohammed (Gas & Power Marketing);
Anibor Kragha (Refineries), while Babatunde
Adeniran would be in charge of Ventures.
The chief executive officer in charge of
Finance & Services would be Isiaka
Abdulrazaq, while the Executive Head,
Corporate Services will be Isa Inuwa.
On the workers’ fears, the minister said the
exercise has a “zero sum in terms of job loss”.
“The principle of restructuring approved by
the President is that nobody losses work,” he
said. “I do not have the mandate of the
president to create a job loss situation, but to
try to ensure that everyone gets busy, unless
for reasons of bad staff performance and
fraud. There is no mass attempt to let people
go.”
He said the decision to embark on the
restructuring followed an analysis of the
number of staff, which revealed that the
corporation was over-staffed, and therefore
the need for them to be meaningfully engaged.
The only way to realize that objective, the
minister said, was to create jobs for everybody
in the system to him enable have something
doing.
“We don’t want people coming to the office to
read newspapers. We want everybody to get
busy and earn money. If we do that we will
realise that there would be adequate staff to
man the different units, and that we don’t
really have the problem of over-staff after
all,” he said.

Breaking: Reps take over Kogi Assembly

The House of Representatives on Wednesday, took over
the functions of the Kogi State House of Assembly over
the crisis that engulfed the assembly in the last one
month.
This is even as it called on the Inspector General of
Police Solomon Arase to immediately seal off the
assembly since the House has taken over its functions.
In taking the decision at plenary, the House said its action
was in line with the provision of Section 11 (4) of the
1999 Constitution, which says the National Assembly
could take over the functions of any state assembly that
is enmeshed in crisis.

Recall that that five members of the Kogi assembly
purportedly impeached the speaker Momoh Jimoh Lawal
and elected Umar Imam as new speaker.
The lower chamber's action will take effect as soon as
the Senate concurs.

Death toll in Lagos building collapse now 22

Twenty-two people have now died in the collapse of a
five-storey building under construction in an upmarket
area of Nigeria's biggest city Lagos, a rescue official said
Wednesday.
"We recovered four more bodies today when we resumed
operations, bringing the total death toll so far to 22,"
Ibrahim Farinloye, from the National Emergency
Management Agency (NEMA), told AFP.
"Some of the 13 people picked up alive from the
wreckage of the building have been taken to the general
hospital on Lagos Island, treated and discharged."
The collapse occurred on Tuesday in the southeastern
district of Lekki, which has some of the most expensive
real estate in the city and has developed rapidly in recent
years into a preferred location for wealthier Nigerians and
expatriate workers.
Building collapses happen frequently in densely populated
areas of Lagos, which is home to some 20 million people.
Poor workmanship and materials, and a lack of official
oversight are often blamed.
But collapses are rarer in wealthier districts.
Lekki is home to gated communities of US-style
suburban homes and prices for a detached house can
reach into the millions of dollars.
It was not immediately clear what caused the collapse,
which happened after heavy rains, and Farinloye said
local government agencies had begun an investigation.
The stricken building was owned by Lekki Gardens, a
Nigerian private real estate company which has
properties in the area, the NEMA official added.
AFP contacted the company but there was no immediate
response.

Tyga finally speaks about his father who is serving a life sentence, shares letter from his dad

It all started after the 26 year old rapper shared this photo
of himself and 2pac Shakur and called him dad. Many
thought he meant 2pac was his dad as there have been long
standing rumours that Tyga's biological father is a Los
Angeles Hip Hop artist. But Tyga quickly shut down the
speculations and explained what he meant by calling 2pac
dad and finally spoke about his dad who is incarcerated.
